McHugh receives award for paper on polymers

Anthony McHugh, chair of the chemical engineering department, has been named a co-recipient of the 2006 Alan Glanville Award of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. The award is given annually for a paper published by the Institute that is of particular merit in the field of polymers.

McHugh’s paper was titled “Microstructure and kinematic aspects of blown film extrusion process: II. Numerical modelling and prediction of LLDPE [linear low-density polyethylene] and LDPE [low-density polyethylene].”
The paper’s co-authors, and co-recipients of the Glanville Award, were Amod A. Ogale, professor of chemical engineering at Clemson University; S.S. Cherukupalli, a former Ph.D. student of Ogale’s at Clemson; and Lars K. Henrichsen. Henrichsen, a former Ph.D. student of McHugh’s at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earned his doctorate this year.
The paper was published in 2004 in the journal Plastics, Rubber and Composites: Macromolecular Engineering.
The work was part of a joint project carried out under the National Science Foundation’s Center for Advanced Engineering Fibers and Films, located at Clemson, of which McHugh is an affiliate member.
The awards ceremony takes place Oct. 19 on the River Thames in London.
