Linderman rotunda will honor Butz family gift

Lee Butz ‘55, chief executive officer, and his son, Greg Butz ’79, ‘81G, president, of Alvin H. Butz, Inc., an Allentown-based construction company, have given a gift to the renovation of Linderman Library.
In recognition of their gift, Lehigh will name the library’s Rotunda Bay in honor of the Butzes.
The renovations to the building—the first since 1929—will transform the 128-year-old library into a center for the humanities and will include the addition of classrooms and common spaces, new computers and technology, and enhanced building access and navigation. The gift from the Butzes is part of the university’s $500 million fundraising effort known as Shine Forever: The Campaign for Lehigh, of which Linderman Library is a priority.
“We decided to make our gift for several reasons,” Lee and Greg Butz say. “We believe that the education we received at Lehigh gave us a head start in our careers in the construction industry. Lehigh’s growth in size and prestige has been an ever-increasing source of pride to us.”
Lee earned an undergraduate degree from Lehigh in 1955; Greg earned an undergraduate degree from Lehigh in 1979 and a graduate degree in 1981.
Linderman Library also holds a special place in their hearts.
“Because neither of us lived on campus, we probably spent more time in Linderman than the average students. For us, and for many alumni, Linderman Library is the essence of Lehigh University,” they say.
“Lee and Greg have a long history of active involvement with their alma mater in so many areas, and their gift is simply marvelous,” says Gregory C. Farrington, Lehigh president. “It seems most appropriate too that this prominent space, really the signature design element of the Linderman renovation, will bear the Butz name.”
Lee and Greg Butz are very active at Lehigh as committed alumni and volunteers. In 1995, Lee received an honorary degree from Lehigh University.
Alvin H. Butz, Inc., of Allentown, founded in 1937 by Alvin H. Butz, is the oldest and largest construction management firm in the Lehigh Valley.
