Lehigh’s Society of Women Engineers prepares for an active semester
The Society of Women Engineers, better known as SWE, is a national organization dedicated to promoting engineering among women. Preparing to enter a field where they’ll be heavily outnumbered by male colleagues, Lehigh’s student chapter is a way for students to meet and interact with other female engineers, and find support for their chosen career paths with other students facing the same challenges. SWE members are also active, through programs such as Charting Horizons and Opportunities In Careers in Engineering and Science (CHOICES), in promoting interest in science and engineering among grade-school and middle-school girls.
SWE has these events in store for the month of October:
-- Thursday, October 9, 7:00 pm, 360 Packard Lab:
Members will discuss the upcoming national convention on November 6-8 in Baltimore, MD. This event will include workshops, speakers, a career fair, and other networking opportunities. Attendance to the Thursday chapter meeting is recommended if you wish to attend the national convention.
-- Thursday, October 16, 7:00pm, 171 Rauch:
Representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and from the Port Authority of NY/NJ will speak about the benefits of working for the public sector, and will finish the presentation with a question and answer period. Both organizations have job opportunities for graduating seniors as well as internships for engineering and business majors, even for those just finishing their first year of college classes.
-- Thursday, October 23, 7:00pm, 171 Rauch:
Students will learn how to make smart financial choices with “Saving and Investing with Vanguard.” Representatives from Vanguard will cover information about the changing economy and its impact upon engineering, personal savings, investing, and savings for retirement.
