Lehigh presidential search committee is formed
James Tanenbaum, chairman of the Lehigh University Board of Trustees, today announced the formation of a Presidential Search Committee to make recommendations to the board regarding possible successors to President Gregory Farrington.
Farrington announced on Oct. 7 his plans to step down in June 2006. Until then, he will continue to provide leadership to the institution as he has done for the past eight years.
“We are grateful for President Farrington’s creative vision that has shaped our academic mission and fueled development of distinctive programs that have attracted outstanding faculty, students, and staff to our campus,” Tanenbaum says. “The university has been extremely fortunate to have someone of his ability, caliber and integrity to lead Lehigh during this important time in the university’s evolution. This is a distinct advantage as we move forward with this process in attracting outstanding candidates for our next president.”
The committee is being chaired by Bill Hecht '64, who had been an active member of Lehigh’s board for many years before stepping down in June. Membership in the Search Committee includes individuals from a broad cross section of the campus community:
• Board of trustees members Paul Leitner '76 (committee co-vice chair) and Karen Stuckey '75, as well as Tanenbaum '70 (ex officio).
• General Counsel Frank Roth '80 (committee co-vice chair), Dean of Athletics Joe Sterrett '76 and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Anne Meltzer, from the university’s senior administration.
• Faculty members Rajan Menon '75G, professor of international relations; Paul Chou, associate professor of music; Susan Sherer, professor of management and marketing; George White, professor of education and human services; and Tony McHugh, professor of chemical engineering.
• Students Donald McCullough '06G, president of the graduate student senate, and Cara Diorio '07, secretary to the student senate (undergraduate).
Providing staff support to the committee will be Debra Hartzell Nyby, executive assistant to the provost, and Elaine Kudella, executive secretary, office of the general counsel.
Farrington plans to continue on at Lehigh after stepping down as president in June 2006, holding the board-appointed role of Distinguished University Service Professor.
