Lehigh observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Kristal Brent Zook, famed journalist, author and scholar, will be the keynote speaker at Lehigh’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Vine and Packer Avenues in Bethlehem.
The university will also host an interfaith prayer breakfast earlier that day from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the Asa Packer Room on the third floor of the University Center. There also will be a “not-quite-brown-bag” luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in University Center Room 303 to discuss the topic of “White Privilege and Christian Privilege.”
All events are free and open to the public.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the noblest aspirations of the human spirit: equality, freedom, justice, and peace,” says Gregory Farrington, Lehigh president. “I encourage all members of the Lehigh family to find a meaningful and personal way to join in our nation’s celebration of Dr. King’s legacy.”
Zook has written about popular culture, race, gender, and politics for more than a decade. Her work in film and television has appeared in such notable publications as The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post , USA Weekend and Vibe magazine. She is currently a contributing writer for Essence magazine and an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University.
“Lehigh works every day to create a more diverse and multicultural learning and living environment for our students,” says Stephan Coggs, assistant dean of multicultural affairs. “Bringing in speakers like Dr. Zook helps us to achieve our goals while honoring the legacy of an important man like Martin Luther King, Jr.”
Zook has also worked as an editor and producer for television and radio, most recently on National Public Radio’s “The Tavis Smiley Show.”
The events are sponsored by the Lehigh University Office of Multicultural Affairs, Africana Studies, the Humanities Center, the Women’s Center, InterVarsity and Reformed University Fellowship.
