Keating, Bergen lead Lehigh to record-setting win
Junior quarterback Kyle Keating had a career day, as he threw for 344 yards and six touchdowns, which tied a school record set in 1993 by Scott Semptimphelter, as Lehigh's football team defeated Georgetown 45-24 at Harbin Field on Saturday.
Junior tight end Adam Bergen was on the receiving end of many of those Keating passes, also tying a school record, hauling in 14 catches on the afternoon, equaling the marks set by Rob Varano and Rennie Benn.
The win improved Lehigh’s record to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks and Colgate are tied for first place by one game over Bucknell, which lost to the Raiders on Saturday.
“I was very pleased with the way we came out and established ourselves offensively and defensively,” head coach Pete Lembo said. “I thought Kyle (Keating) did a real good job of reading the defense and obviously Adam (Bergen) and all of our receivers caught the ball well today. We had very few dropped passes.”
After coming off of a bye week, Lehigh showed no rust in the early going as the Mountain Hawks moved the ball at will on offense and dictated the tempo from the onset.
Lehigh deferred the opening kickoff, but got the ball back in a hurray, as Georgetown fumbled the ball away, putting the Mountain Hawks in outstanding field position. Lehigh then capitalized on the Hoya turnover as Keating hit sophomore receiver Winfred Porter from three yards out for his first career touchdown, and Lehigh grabbed the 7-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, the lead would increase to 14-0 when Keating hit sophomore fullback Jason Beck from eight yards out and the Mountain Hawks were in control. Bergen caught a 28-yard touchdown of his own, pushing the Brown and White advantage to 21 points. At this point, it appeared as though Lehigh would cruise to victory as it did a season ago, when the Mountain Hawks pummeled the Hoyas 69-0.
The Mountain Hawks added a 21-yard Matt Douglas field goal, and the lead was increased to 24-7. Georgetown did grab the momentum going into halftime, as Jason Carter picked off a pass and rumbled 37-yards for a touchdown, to pull the Hoyas within 14 at halftime.
All-purpose receiver Luke McArdle hauled in a 33-yard pass from Hoya quarterback Alondzo Turner and the Lehigh lead was down to seven. But, the Mountain Hawks were unfazed, as Keating continued his brilliance with two more touchdown passes, one each to senior running back Jermine Pugh from 11-yards out and another to Bergen from 20-yards, on a beautiful throw over the middle of the field.
Bergen finished with 156 yards receiving on the day, to go along with three touchdowns. Senior Dave Crockett added five catches for 59 yards on the afternoon. Senior running backs Dave Wilson and Pugh had solid games for Lehigh as well, with Wilson churning out 54 yards, and Pugh adding 50.
Lehigh will return to action Saturday when the Mountain Hawks play host to Towson from Goodman Stadium. Kick off is slated for 12:30.
