Johnny's Bagels and Deli coming to Campus Square
Johnny's Bagels and Deli, a popular eatery on the corner of Main and Market Streets in Bethlehem, is opening a new restaurant in Campus Square.
Johnny’s, owned by John and Sarah Zohir, will replace Pastaficio, which closes its doors after lunchtime today. In addition, Jazzman’s Café also has announced plans to close after commencement in May.
While no immediate replacement has been found for Jazzman's, University Business Services is using this opportunity to examine the perceptions and untapped potential of the current Campus Square.
Johnny's Bagels and Deli will have a soft opening in early April, and then close for the summer for an extensive redesign. A grand-reopening is planned for late August when students return. Both Johnny's Bagels and Deli locations will accept GoldPLUS from Lehigh students, faculty, and staff.
“This opportunity will open many doors for our store and Lehigh students, which may not have been the case with other locations we looked at on the South Side,” says owner John Zohir.
Mark Ironside, executive director of Lehigh’s business services, says Johnny’s will be a great fit for the Campus Square complex, which also includes The Cup ice cream parlor, the Lehigh University Bookstore, and student housing.
“Johnny’s Bagels and Deli is the right restaurant to join Campus Square and our other merchant partners,” Ironside says. “It has a great track record of providing excellent food and beverages, a menu with diverse appeal, and a real desire to become an integral part of the Lehigh and South Side communities. Pastaficio has been a good partner to Lehigh over the past five years. I know Lehigh students, faculty, and staff join me in thanking them.”
Ironside says the turnover of businesses creates “the exciting opportunity to find ways to better meet the needs of our campus community. We are using this opportunity to examine the current perceptions and identify the right mix of retail, events, and services to attract students, faculty, staff, and Bethlehem residents to Campus Square.”
This past year, University Business Services has held several focus groups and also has drawn on preliminary research from the Student Space Task Force that has supplied vital information regarding student interests. Additionally, University Business Services is in the process of creating a survey that will be made available to students, faculty, and staff after spring break to help inform thinking as the Campus Square revamp progresses and a new partner is identified for the Jazzman’s Café space.
Ironside and his group have been working with an outside consultant, and a new marketing plan is in development that reinforces capturing the artistic, creative vibe of South Side Bethlehem and the importance of supporting the small business owner.
