Jean Farrington honored by YWCA
Jean Farrington’s leadership and volunteerism earned her a Woman of the Year Award from the YWCA of Bethlehem at the organization’s 31st annual awards banquet on March 29.
The award recognizes individual women for their outstanding contributions to the community as volunteers, community activists, fund raisers, leaders of special projects/events or for advocating on behalf of others.
I am both touched and honored to be recognized by the YWCA. I have appreciated the opportunity to become involved in the greater community of the Lehigh Valley and have found the whole experience both enriching and energizing,” Farrington said in accepting the award.
Since arriving at Lehigh in 1998, Jean Farrington, a major gift officer with Lehigh’s development office and wife of Lehigh President Gregory Farrington, has become a pillar of the Lehigh Valley community. She serves on the boards of the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, Southside Vision 2012 Steering Committee, Historic Bethlehem Partnership and the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra.
For the past eight years, she has served as honorary chair for Lehigh’s Good Scholar Election, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. A member of the American Library Association since 1974 and a former academic librarian at the University of Pennsylvania and elsewhere, she has endorsed the reading program the University Bookstore hosts for community children and has read to and donated books to Lehigh Valley child care programs. She has also been instrumental in growth and development of Lehigh University’s library programs.
Jean Farrington was called “a catalyst in building up a true partnership between the City of Bethlehem and Lehigh University” on the night she was honored by the YWCA.
