I've seen so many people die because they could not find a match, DeDecker says. We will all experience having ourselves or someone we know who needs stem cells.
Registration to donate stem cells or bone marrow can be made through the National Marrow Donor Program. Unless sponsored by a program, potential donors may be charged to have their blood typed in order to enter the database.
In Rob Nugent's case, Lehigh sponsored the donation program.
Lehigh helped it to happen, Nugent says.
Gift of Life, the registry that Sarah Zuckerman joined, is a member of the World Marrow Donor Association, a participating registry in Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide, and an affiliate of the Caitlin Raymond International Registry.
I hope my experience makes more people aware of this process and motivates them to literally donate of themselves, Zuckerman says.
