Governors School offers global view
The purpose of the governor's school is to expose Pennsylvania and international high school students to the topic of global entrepreneurship and effective business practices, as well as ignite their spirit of creativity, says Richard M. Durand, Herbert E. Ehlers Dean of the College of Business and Economics.
Lehigh’s program, which kicked off with an inspirational ceremony at Zoellner Arts Center on June 29, is one of eight Governor's Schools in the state operating under the Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools of Excellence. The experiential program at Lehigh is the only one that includes students from abroad to help provide a global view and a well-rounded experience.
This year’s program attracted international students representing Moldova, Australia, Slovakia, Argentina, Israel, Mexico, Peru, and Slovenia.
Fundamental to democracy is education and one of the most important things that we can currently do based upon the global situation is to expose a number of individuals to different kinds of educational processes, says Sally A. White, professor and dean, College of Education. Having the international students be part of Governor's School is just another extension of the College of Education's philosophy on how we believe that education can empower and make a difference in the lives of individuals not only across Pennsylvania, but across the country and across the world.
The entrepreneurial experience is one of the most exciting aspects of the Governor’s School, says Laurie Gostley-Hackett, director of the Governor’s School. Teams of students work with a partner company to solve a real company problem/opportunity. Over the five weeks of the Governor's School, the student team works to research the company, review issues/problems, and then they develop possible recommendations and solutions.
Some of this year’s business partners include Lehigh Valley Hospital, Just Born, Michael Dunn Company, Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra, and the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley.
The Governor’s School hosts an Entrepreneur-in-Residence during each day of the program. Featured Entrepreneurs include R. Chadwick Paul of Ben Franklin Technology Partners, Mike Gausling of OraSure Technologies, Mike Bolton of PA Early Stage Partners, and Keith Meier of Cigars International.
