Gardner named LGBTQA director
Timothy Gardner, the interim director of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Services at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., has been named the new director of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Ally (LGBTQA) program at Lehigh.
Gardner, who officially arrives at Lehigh in mid-July, will be first director of the program, which provides a variety of services to students, faculty and staff on the Lehigh campus.
“Timothy is a proven professional who is dedicated to working to support, advocate, educate and create visibility to improve the campus climate,” says Sharon Basso, associate vice provost and dean of students at Lehigh. “He was very impressive when he visited with us on campus, and we’re very pleased that he has decided to join the Lehigh family.”
At Lehigh, Gardner will head up the office that seeks to change the Lehigh University climate by inspiring a vision of diversity that is aware of, engaged in, and appreciative of issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. The LGBTQA office promotes academic and personal growth and development of LGBTQA students, in addition to their full involvement in all aspects of campus life.
In his new role, Gardner says he is looking forward to work with the students, faculty, staff and community.
“My overarching vision for the LGBTQA program at Lehigh is one that integrates many areas of the university to support, educate, advocate, create visibility, and improve campus life for sexual and gender-variant minorities,” he says. “I plan to create a Lehigh specific program that is based on LGBTQA academic standards through listening and working with the university and its alumni.”
In addition to his role at St. Cloud, Gardner also served as program advisor to the LGBT Center at Minnesota State University at Mankato.
Gardner earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Westfield State University in Massachusetts and his Master of Science degree in Ethnic and Multi-Cultural Studies from the Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Gardner was selected from a field of more than 80 candidates for the role of first full-time director of LGBTQA services. The search committee included Basso; Kristin Handler, director of the Women’s Center and chair of the LGBTQA Steering Committee; Henry Baird, professor of computer science and engineering and chair of the Task Force for Faculty Diversity; Jackie Matthews, associate vice president of Human Resources and chair of the Task Force for Staff Diversity; Christina Diggs ’07, a gryphon and member of the Task Force for Student Diversity; and Hannah Stewart-Gambino, former professor of political science at Lehigh and now Dean of the College at
Lafayette.
