Frangopol to receive ISHMII Fellowship

Professor Dan M. Frangopol, the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will soon be one of six Fellows elected by the International Society for Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructures (ISHMII) for 2009.
The organization confers Fellow status on a select group of members whose contributions have notably influenced the structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil engineering infrastructure.

Dan Frangopol

The aim of ISHMII is to advance the understanding and practice of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), a set of systems that provide information on demand about significant change or damage occurring in a structure. The technology offers life-saving and economic benefits to society and industry by enabling engineers to detect and correct infrastructure problems at the earliest possible time.
Frangopol will be honored for research that integrates SHM into the design, assessment and management of civil infrastructure under uncertainty.
He will receive his Certificate of Fellowship at the Fourth International Conference on Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure (SHMII-4) , which takes place this year in Zurich, Switzerland July 22-24. The conference is organized by EMPA, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research.
Frangopol is also a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Concrete Institute (ACI) , and International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).
