Former D.C. Risk Management Official to Join Lehigh

Kim Nimmo, the former program administrator for the Office of Risk Management in Washington, D.C., has been named Lehigh’s new director of risk management, effective Monday, July 10. Nimmo will succeed Richard Freeman, who retired in May after 29 years of service with the university.

“We’re very excited that Kim will be bringing over two decades of experience in risk management and insurance and a wealth of knowledge to Lehigh,” said Frank Roth, Lehigh’s General Counsel.

“Throughout the interview process, it was apparent that Kim has a broad perspective on enterprise-wide risk management, and will build upon the Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Plan that Rich Freeman has established here at Lehigh. We’re certain he will quickly acclimate to Lehigh and that he will continue the high level of expertise and dedication that Rich brought to this role.”

In Nimmo’s most recent position with the District of Columbia Office of Risk Management, he was responsible for identifying, analyzing and reducing the district’s exposure to risk. He oversaw the district’s risk management and safety activities, monitored aspects of local and federal regulatory compliance to reduce risks, and reviewed and administered safety and health policies, including overseeing risk prevention and safety training and education.

Nimmo also has experience in emergency preparedness and recently updated the district’s Emergency Response Plans. As Lehigh’s director of risk management, he will maintain and implement the university’s emergency preparedness, crisis management and business continuity plans.

Prior to his service with the District of Columbia, Nimmo was a consultant to higher education; a Senior Risk Consultant for United Educators; a provider of liability insurance and risk management services to more than 1,200 universities, colleges, and schools; manager of Environmental Health and Safety for Vanguard Services Unlimited; and a risk management consultant and underwriting specialist for Farmers Insurance Group.

Nimmo earned his Bachelor of Arts from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. He is relocating to the Lehigh Valley with his wife and two children.
