Exhibition: The Drawings of Wifredo Lam: 1940-1955
Composition con mascara, C. 1940
Lehigh University Art Galleries’ current exhibition, “The Drawings of Wifredo Lam: 1940-1955,” is the first private collection of Cuban art displayed in America since 1959. It took Ricardo Viera, chief curator and director of LUAG, five bids and 20 years to bring the 21 original works on paper by Lam, Cuba’s most internationally acclaimed 20th century artist, to the United States.
The exhibition features drawings from the private family collection of Lam’s grandnephew, Juan Castillo Vázquez, and tops the artnet News list of the fall’s 30 most important shows around the world. Two special events accompanied the exhibition:
Vázquez presented a lecture and reading of Lam’s poetry in September, and historian Lowery Stokes Sims delivered a lecture on Lam’s work in early November. The exhibition continued through Dec. 10 in the LUAG main gallery in Zoellner Arts Center.
