EES department presents two intriguing lectures today
Lehigh’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences will present two lectures on March 19 as part of the department’s annual D. Foster Hewett Lecture Series.
William Ruddiman, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of the University of Virginia, will deliver a talk titled “Farmers Inadvertently Changed Earth's Climate Thousands of Years Ago” at 12:10 p.m. in Lewis Lab 270.
Colin Prentice, Ph.D., professor at the University of Bristol, will speak on “The What, Why and How of Biosphere Modeling and Biosphere-Climate Interactions” at 1 p.m. in the same location.
Ruddiman is a well-known climate scientist who has made many original contributions to tectonic-scale and near-term climate studies. He is the author of a popular textbook titled Earth's Climate: Past and Future.
In his provocative new book, Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum: How Humans Took Control of Climate, he argues that humans have been changing the climate for some 8,000 years and that they have thus delayed (perhaps indefinitely) a glaciation that is now overdue.
Prentice is an Earth System modeler, who has been a key component of several major international projects, including the 2001 IPCC report on climate change. He is leader of the QUEST Program (Quantifying and Understanding the Earth System), an international program supported by UK's The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). He is also chair of IGBP/AIMES (Analysis, Integration and Modeling of The Earth System) of IGBP.
