The Eagles have landed
The Philadelphia Eagles, who advanced to the NFC divisional title game last season, opened their 2002 training camp this past weekend at Lehigh University. Rookies reported to camp on July 26th with returning veterans reporting the following day. Preseason expectations are high for the young and resurgent Eagles who look to advance further into the NFL playoffs this year.
This year marks the seventh season in which Lehigh and the Eagles have teamed up to host one of the NFL’s most popular training camps. Eagles fans who are new to the Goodman Campus will find ample parking, spacious and well-maintained practice fields, activities for children, and close access to the hard-hitting action and the professional players. The camp is free of charge to all visitors. During their stay the Eagles reside in Lehigh’s dormitories, practice on Lehigh’s grass and turf training surfaces and lift weights in Lehigh’s new strength training center, the A. Haigh Cundey Varsity House. The Philadelphia television and radio networks also broadcast live from the Lehigh campus in Bethlehem each evening, providing Lehigh with a month of widespread regional news exposure.
Those wishing to get a first look of the entire 2002 Eagles squad in full pads will get to do so on July 31st. There are two practice sessions daily with the first starting at 8:30 a.m. and running until 11:30 a.m., and the second session getting under way at 2:30 p.m. and concluding at 4:30 p.m. The Eagles Training Camp at Lehigh runs through August 15th.
Visitors and fans can obtain the most current information on practice schedules, directions and updates by surfing to the Eagles web site or calling the Eagles training camp hotline at (610) 758-6868 for any last-minute schedule changes. Lehigh, annually ranked among the top 40 institutions in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, is less than 70 miles from both Philadelphia and New York and is easily reached by major highways. Lehigh boasts a 24-sport NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program with a national reputation for excellence in both athletics and academics. The school ranks first in the latest NCAA graduation rates report, graduating 96% of its scholar athletes, and was named as one of the top 20 athletics programs in the nation by U.S. News. Lehigh’s nationally ranked football squad is 54-18(.750) since the Eagles arrived seven years ago, claiming Patriot League titles and NCAA I-AA playoff appearances in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.
