Council for Equity and Community announces upcoming town hall meeting

The Council for Equity and Community (CEC) will hold an inaugural town hall meeting on Monday, Sept. 15, beginning at noon in Neville Hall 1. Faculty, staff and students are invited to join President Alice P. Gast in attending this question-and-answer session with the members of the CEC.
The CEC is a 14-member council that was formed in February and first convened in late March. It was charged by Gast to implement and sustain university-wide initiatives to build an inclusive community of diversity on campus. Co-chairs Carolina Hernandez, community services director, and Michael Raposa, professor of religion studies, are excited about this opportunity to engage the campus community and let people know what the CEC is all about.
“If we’re going to succeed in making Lehigh a true reflection of social diversity, we need to draw lots of people into the conversation,” Raposa says. “So the purpose of the town hall is really twofold: to introduce the CEC to the campus community and to hear what’s on people’s minds. We welcome their input on this most important topic.”
The CEC has been reaching out to forge alliances with various departments, including Admissions and Financial Aid, Human Resources, the ombudspersons and the campus police. The town hall is another example of the council’s determination not to operate in a vacuum.
“As a council, we’ve already made significant progress on some of our agenda items,” Raposa says. “We’re working with issues such as recruitment, student application materials, first-year student orientation, residential and social life on campus … Our team is passionate about helping transform Lehigh into a more just, equitable and inclusive community.”
“We are thrilled to be hosting the first of what is sure to be many town hall meetings,” Hernandez says. “This is a continuation of the conversation started by the Campus Climate Survey, and that’s what we seek to embody.”
If you will not be able to attend the meeting or would like to submit a question to the CEC in advance of the meeting, send an e-mail to dac208@lehigh.edu.
Advance registration is not required to attend the town hall. Light refreshments will be available.
