Concert spotlights works of Jazz Composer Contest winner

	Bill Warfield is an internationally acclaimed performer in his own right.

The New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra, directed by Bill Warfield, presents The Lost Generation of Jazz at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 in Zoellner Arts Center’s Baker Hall.
The performance features the works of the winner of the 2005 Jazz Composer Contest, a worldwide, yearlong search for a distinguished jazz composer between the ages of 40 and 60. This year’s winner is Glenn Cashman, chair of the jazz department at Colgate University in upstate New York since 2001. Cashman established himself as a topnotch performer, composer and educator in the Southern California jazz community.
Warfield, an assistant professor of music, is the recipient of the first Frank Hook Assistant Professorship Award (2000) and the Franz/Class of 1968 Award. In 1997, he founded The Lehigh Valley Jazz Repertory Orchestra, a non-profit organization dedicated to the recreation of classic jazz performances as well as the creation of new works for jazz orchestra. He also is an international performer, recording artist, band leader and producer.
Cashman found inspiration for a free-wheeling, compositional approach to saxophone and improvisation in the playing of Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane. His compositions reflect a rainbow of influences including Cedar Walton, Horace Silver, Aaron Copland, Georgy Ligeti, Billy Strayhorn, Bob Brookmeyer and Bela Bartok.
Cashman’s CD I’ve Got Your Rhythm has recently been released on the Indigo label with jazz greats Kenny Barron, Ray Drummond and Ben Riley. He has also performed with Dennis Chambers, Claudio Roditi, Gary Foster, Kendall Kay, Drew Gress, Jim Pugh, Jeff Littleton, George Colligan, Tony Martucci, The Central New York Jazz Orchestra, Rob McConnell, Frank Potenza and many others. He has appeared in jazz club and concert venues in Russia, Sweden, Australia, on the East Coast and in Southern California.
