CNN analyst Jeffrey Toobin to visit Lehigh March 25

Author Jeffrey Toobin, who is also a CNN senior analyst and staff writer for the New Yorker, will speak at Lehigh at 8 p.m, on Wednesday, March 25, in Packard Auditorium.
The expert on media, politics and law will share his thoughts on the Obama administration, its response to the global economic crisis, related legal issues, and the role of the media in shaping political opinions.
The talk, which is free and open to the public, is being sponsored by the Lehigh University Friends of the Libraries and the university’s Visiting Lecturers Committee.
We are excited to bring Jeffrey Toobin to campus,” says Susan Cady, who organized the visit. “As an author and a media analyst, he is able to offer insightful quick commentary—as he did recently during the Obama inauguration—and to communicate results of extensive research in an engaging book. His visit is very timely as the political and legal issues surrounding the economic crisis and its resolution are going to be quite challenging.
Toobin is the author of four books, including his most recent, the New York Times bestseller “The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court.” This 2007 work delves into the historical, political and personal inner workings of the Supreme Court and its justices, offering readers a rarely seen glimpse of the dynamics behind major decisions that shaped the nation.
His previous bestseller, “Too Close to Call: The 36-Day Battle to Decide the 2000 Election,” is generally viewed as the definitive account of the contentious fight between George W. Bush and former vice president, Al Gore, which ultimately led to the controversial 5-4 Supreme Court decision that awarded Bush the presidency.
As a writer for the New Yorker, Toobin has written articles on subjects that included former Attorney General John Ashcroft, the Paula Jones’ sexual harassment case, the rise of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and the trial of convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.
The magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law and former editor of the Harvard Law Review also served as Assistant U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn, and as associate counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel Lawrence E. Walsh. That experience provided the basis for his first book, “Opening Arguments: A Young Lawyer’s First Case: United States vs. Oliver North.”
He also spent six years at ABC News, where he received a 2000 Emmy Award for his coverage of the Elian Gonzalez custody battle.
