Chamber music concert set

The East Winds Quintet celebrates its fifth season of performing chamber music for winds with a performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20 in Baker Hall at Zoellner Arts Center.
The performance, directed by David Diggs, features Serenade by Ferenc Farkas, Woodwind Quintet by Frank Lynn Payne, Suite Op. 11 by Nicolai Berezowsky, Quintet No. 2 by Johann Christian Bach (trans. by Diggs) and finishes with Eugene Albulescu on piano in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Quintet in E-flat for Piano, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn and Bassoon.
Drawing from the vast wealth of wind music, the quintet’s repertoire includes not only music specifically for woodwind quintet, but also compositions that utilize the various combinations of the five instruments. Past concerts have included trios, quartets and quintets, and today completes the cycle of important wind and piano works. The members represent the best of New York, Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley, with playing experiences that span every musical genre and style.
Diggs, the quintet’s director, joined the Lehigh faculty in 1998 as teacher of harmony and oboe. A woodwind specialist, he is active in New York City where he regularly performs with the NYC Ballet Orchestra and the Carnegie Trio. He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, NYC Opera Orchestra, Moiseyev Russian Ballet, Goldman Memorial Band and in numerous Broadway shows.
He has appeared as soloist with such notable figures as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Isaac Hayes, Yanni, Johnny Mathis and Jerry Herman, and was a guest artist on Saturday Night Live. Diggs received a master’s degree from Stony Brook, where he studied with members of the New York Woodwind Quintet, most notably Ronald Roseman (oboe), Samuel Baron (flute) and Arthur Weisberg (bassoon).
