CANstruction comes to the Lehigh Valley
The international food charity competition Canstruction® is coming to the Lehigh Valley this year, courtesy of Lehigh engineering students, faculty, and staff.
This annual charity event, now in its 17th year of existence across the U.S. and Canada, requires its 100 participating teams to design and build a visually-exciting free-standing structure comprised entirely of canned goods. Most importantly, all of the “building materials” are subsequently donated to a local shelter or food bank for distribution to local families in need.
The Rossin Junior Fellows (RJF) student group, the student-leadership organization of Lehigh’s Engineering college, is the exclusive sponsor of Canstruction in the Lehigh Valley.
On March 13 from 12-4 p.m. in the Packard Lab lobby, four separate teams will “CANstruct” their creations in the main lobby of Packard Lab. The teams consist of RJF members and students from Bethlehem’s Broughal Middle School.
The middle schoolers helped to brainstorm the project and met with the Lehigh students to get some insight into Computer Aided Design (CAD) programming, used by the Lehigh students to create workable designs. All team members from Lehigh and Broughal will be on hand for the “build day” on March 13, which is free and open to the public.
The four teams will be creating a banana split, cartoon character SpongeBob Squarepants, Dino the Dinosaur of Flintstones fame, and the Eiffel Tower. These exhibits will be comprised of cans ranging from Bumblebee Tuna to Busch’s Baked Beans.
The creations will be on display in Packard lobby until March 27, at which point all of the approximate 3,500 cans used in this year’s event will be donated to the South Bethlehem Neighborhood Center.
