Boeing awards $23,000 grant to fund programs
Boeing’s university relations champion Senior Manager Robert Beggs is pleased that Boeing has awarded Lehigh a $23,000 grant in support of a variety of student organizations, two student scholarships, and the Supply Chain Management Faculty Development Fund. Lehigh has done an excellent job targeting Boeing investment toward programs that directly enhance students’ academic and professional development, he said.
The Supply Chain Management program received $8,000 to help facilitate faculty research, develop new curricula and incorporate technology for the undergraduate program. The new four-year bachelor’s degree spans the College of Business and the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science and is designed to educate students who can strategically configure the supply chains of companies such as Boeing for global advantages.
Lehigh’s new Supply Chain Management student organization, the first of its kind, received $4,000 for start-up costs. This organization will provide value-added resources to students via hands-on projects made possible by Boeing’s contribution in support of planning, staffing and marketing. We are very fortunate to have a company as excellent as Boeing support our supply chain program, said Robert Trent, associate professor of management and marketing. Their generosity is truly appreciated and will be put to good use.
The Boeing grant will also support four other student organizations that facilitate the development of leadership and team management skills outside of the classroom. The Society of Women Engineers, the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Hispanic Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers were each awarded $500. These organizations work to discourage barriers, provide moral support, and encourage diversity. Boeing’s support underlines the company’s own commitment to diversity in the workplace.
The Boeing Scholarship program not only helps Lehigh attract the best students to campus but also increases the pipeline of qualified professionals for industry. Galina Gorelik, a senior computer science major, and Jessica Ann Hill, a senior supply chain management major, are four time recipients of the Boeing Company Scholarship. Each was awarded $4,500 to apply to their college tuition.
I am honored to have received a scholarship from such a prestigious and well-respected company as Boeing, said Hill. I am very honored that Boeing has extended the scholarship through my senior year, added Gorelik.
The Boeing Company is a committed and longstanding supporter of education institutions and programs and has been a strong supporter of Lehigh University for several years. The company is particularly interested in programs that advance undergraduate programs, employee recruitment, and research. In addition, Boeing is committed to a performance-based educational system and supports educational reform at the local, state, and national levels through leadership and financial support.
The Lehigh University Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) facilitates relationships with companies such as Boeing and works closely with the university community to strengthen such relationships with both corporate and foundation partners. As a fundraising unit, CFR seeks support from a variety of sources, for programs and projects that advance Lehigh’s mission.
