Avian flu pandemic is topic of International Week keynote address
Dr. Joxel Garcia, director of the World Health Organization’s Pan American offices, will discuss fears of a worldwide Avian flu pandemic as keynote speaker for this year’s International Week.
Garcia’s talk, “From Bioterrorism to Bird Flu: Current Biological Threats Facing Our Country,” will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 in Sinclair Auditorium. The talk, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the LU/UN Partnership.
“We expect a very large contingent of health care workers from the community for this talk,” says Bill Hunter, director of Lehigh’s Office of International Students and Scholars. “We’re certain that this topic has broad appeal beyond the campus community.”
International Week is a series of events designed to celebrate countries, cultures and people who make up Lehigh’s international community.
“We are putting together one of the largest International Week celebrations in the country,” Hunter says. “With more than 30 programs in nine days, we have a very ambitious and diverse schedule of events and activities.”
International Week will kick off with an International Parade of Flags at noon, Wednesday, Nov. 9, and run through Nov. 17. For a full listing of events, visit the Global Union Web site.
In his role with the Pan American Health Organization, García is responsible for setting the general direction and strategy and providing leadership and advice on policy decisions. He is also responsible for maintaining effective relations between the organization and the governments of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
A clinician with expertise in health policy, administration, and business, Garcia also oversees the group’s emergency preparedness and disaster relief programs, which covers threats from biological, chemical or radiological terrorism.
