Appiah to deliver Selfridge Lecture

	Kwame Anthony Appiah will speak at Lehigh on Monday and Wednesday.

Internationally renowned scholar Kwame Anthony Appiah, the Laurance S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University, will deliver the 24th Annual Selfridge Lecture in Philosophy, entitled “Cosmopolitan Roots,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Sinclair Auditorium.
Appiah’s lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Philosophy Department. Appiah will discuss the origins of cosmopolitanism in his own life and in the intellectual history of the west, identify its core ideals, and defend its relevance in an age of globalization. He will deliver a second lecture entitled “Understanding Moral Disagreement” at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in Neville 2.
Appiah, who also serves in the Princeton University Center for Human Values, was born in London, grew up in Ghana, and studied at Cambridge University. He is the author of numerous books, including Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers. (Read an excerpt from the book that appeared in The New York Times Sunday Magazine in January 2006.) His most recent book is Experiments in Ethics, which discusses work on Africa, race and racism, multiculturalism, and the ethics and politics of identity. He also co-edited Microsoft’s Encyclopedia of Africana with Henry Louis Gates Jr.
