Alumni gift will warm hearts of future students

A generous gift from Lynn and George Bovenizer ’63, ’90 Parent, ’93 P, through the Shepherd Foundation, provides a major boost to the Linderman Library renovation project.
In recognition of their generosity, Lehigh University will name the fireplace lounge in the renovated library “The Lynn and George Bovenizer ’63, ’90P, ’93P Fireplace Lounge – East Reading Room.”
“Lynn and George Bovenizer are a delightful couple whose ties to Lehigh run strong and deep. They’ve sent their two sons to Lehigh and have been very generous to the university through the years,” says Gregory Farrington, Lehigh president. “The cozy, comfortable nature of the fireplace lounge attracted their interest, and their latest gift will ensure this area is an inviting place.”
At Lehigh, the architecture and charm of its first library has drawn students, faculty, staff and visitors since its opening in 1878. Linderman Library was donated by university founder Asa Packer in memory of his daughter, Lucy, and with the exception of the completion of the 1929 addition, there have been no structural modifications to Linderman Library until now.
The Linderman Library renovation project, is part of Shine Forever: The Campaign for Lehigh, a $500-million campaign. It will create a vibrant and dynamic intellectual center for the Lehigh campus. Library renovations include new classroom and seminar rooms, a café commons, new computer technology, wired and wireless networking spaces, climate control systems, enhanced building access and navigation.
George Bovenizer majored in chemical engineering as a member of the Class of 1963, and received a master’s degree in business administration in 1964. He was a member of Psi Upsilon and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
The Bovenizers are a Lehigh family, shown through their devotion and generosity to Lehigh as well as the number of family members who have attended. Lynn’s brother, Charles Schaefer III, is also a member of the Class of 1963, and the couple’s two sons, Dave ’90 and Mark ’93, also attended Lehigh.
“Lehigh is a very special place, and the library is such a key part of the university and the educational experience. This gift is our way of ensuring the excellence and future of Lehigh, while giving the students a warm, secure, and relaxing place to read and study,” Bovenizer says.
