Grassroots Campaign Seeks to Combat Disparities
In the March issue of Monitor on Psychology, a publication of the American Psychological Association, Lehigh faculty, staff, and students from the College of Education were pictured in an article titled Grassroots campaign seeks to combat disparities. The article featured the American Psychology Association Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs' grassroots campaign's focus on new racial and ethnic health-disparities legislation. Included were: Karen Huang, director of graduate student life; Arpana Inman, assistant professor of counseling psychology, College of Education; and College of Education counseling psychology graduate students Angela Bethea and Annie Iam.

Author to Speak at Lehigh Commencement
Kurt Vonnegut, an author who combined science fiction, social satire and dark comedy for novels such as ''Slaughterhouse Five,'' will speak during Lehigh University's 136th commencement at 10 a.m. May 24 in Goodman Stadium. Michael R. Schaefer, Lehigh senior class president, said, ''Lehigh has had some amazing speakers and Vonnegut's selection continues that tradition.''

Debating the Larry Fink Exhibit
A literary debate on the controversial Larry Fink photo exhibit in the DuBois Gallery at Lehigh University played out on the Morning Call editorial pages. Nelson R. Maniscalo, a professor of art at Cedar Crest College praised Lehigh administrators, faculty and students for understanding the importance of the free expression of ideas. Steve Salerno, a writer-in-residence at Muhlenberg College saw this exhibit as yet one more example of left-wing radicalism on college campuses.

Reform Needed in Financing of Higher Education
Eli Schwartz, professor emeritus of economics and finance at Lehigh University, wrote that reform in higher education financing is justified when one considers professional and higher education as an investment in human capital. From an analogous point of view (because it is hard to calculate depreciation in this case) the graduate who carries a student loan should be allowed to deduct both interest and the repayment of principal from his or her taxable income.

With the nation's economy showing signs of recovery, the outlook for small businesses in the Lehigh Valley is looking brighter, local experts say. Hopeful that it will, many small businesses are gearing up, according to Sally Handlon, program director at Lehigh University's Small Business Development Center. .

Grading Minority Graduation Rates
William Feigley, who earned a doctorate in education and counseling from Lehigh, said two of the biggest reasons teenagers drop out of school are lack of interest and falling behind academically. He is the director of Bethlehem's in-school suspension program. Besides poor academic progress, research has shown a high correlation between dropping out of high school and pregnancy, lack of interest in school, poor attendance and discipline problems, Feigley said.

DeSales University, on Mission to Improve, Lacks in Full Professors
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about colleges setting their own criteria for becoming a full professor. There is no national standard, and although the number of full professors may affect a school's pocketbook, educators say it doesn't impact the quality of education. Locally, Muhlenberg, Moravian and Cedar Crest colleges and Northampton and Lehigh Carbon community colleges include time-in-rank and merit requirements in their promotion policies; Lafayette College and Lehigh University rely primarily on merit-related criteria.
