C. Bryan Cloyd named the Joseph R. Perella and Amy M. Perella Chair
C. Bryan Cloyd, a leading teacher and researcher in the areas of tax policy and the effects of taxation on business decisions, will join the ranks of Lehigh’s faculty in August as the Joseph R. Perella and Amy M. Perella Chair in the department of accounting.
The Perella Chair is one of four chairs endowed in the College of Business and Economics (CBE) by Joseph Perella ’64, widely regarded as an investment banking pioneer who has advised on billions of dollars of Merger and Acquisition activity throughout his long career.
Cloyd most recently was the John E. Peterson, Jr. Professor of Accounting at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, where he taught various courses on income taxation and a Ph.D. Seminar in Accounting Research Methods. His research has been published in journals such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Law & Economics, National Tax Journal, Journal of the American Taxation Association, Journal of Accounting & Public Policy, and Tax Notes.
Cloyd is a former Editor of the Journal of the American Taxation Association. He has served on the editorial boards of The Accounting Review, Accounting Horizons, and Journal of Behavioral Decision Making. In 2009 he received the American Taxation Association’s Ray M. Sommerfeld Outstanding Tax Educator Award.
“It is a privilege to be joining the Lehigh accounting faculty,” Cloyd said. “Lehigh’s accounting program has an excellent reputation for preparing students for full-time employment. I am impressed with the strong student body and look forward to sharing with them my passion for accounting.”
Cloyd brings public accounting experience to the classroom. Prior to his career in academia, he was a tax manager with Arthur Andersen & Co. Cloyd continues to maintain a current understanding of public accounting practice through numerous consulting projects focused on the design and delivery of continuing tax professional education courses for PwC and Deloitte.
“Bryan is a welcome addition to our strong accounting department. His expertise and extensive research activity will add tremendous value to an already-strong accounting program,” said Dean Georgette Chapman Phillips. “Our students will be the beneficiary of his outstanding background.”
Cloyd earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University and his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Kentucky.
