Panel set to discuss work of Jeffrey Sachs

A panel of Lehigh professors will discuss the work of Jeffrey Sachs, the man the New York Times described as “the most important economist in the world,” at 4:10 p.m. Monday, April 6th, in Room 91 of the Rauch Business Center.
All members of the Lehigh community are invited to attend the event, which is free and open to the public.
The discussion, titled “Lehigh’s 2009 Commencement Speaker Jeffrey Sachs: His Work and Influence,” will feature three professors discussing Sachs’ work from the perspective of their academic disciplines. They are:
Jack Lule, the Joseph B. McFadden Distinguished Professor of Journalism and

Bruce Moon

director of the Globalization and Social Change Initiative
Bruce Moon, professor of international relations
Matt Sanderson, assistant professor of sociology
“To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that Lehigh has ever had such an event to review and analyze the work and contributions of a commencement speaker,” says Bob Thornton, professor of economics who heads the Commencement Speakers Nominations Committee. “Sachs himself is one of the best-known economists in the world and has become renowned for his work on the challenges of economic development and poverty alleviation.”

Matt Sanderson

Scott Wojciechowski, president of the Class of 2009, said he hopes fellow members of the graduating class take the opportunity to learn more about Sachs, who was named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people in the world.
“His work touches so many disciplines and could not be more timely, given the economic challenges the entire world is facing,” he says. “This session will serve as a great introduction so that his commencement message will have a deeper and more meaningful context.”
