A Good Idea is Not Enough
Thursday, April 16, 5:00pm, Neville Auditorium
John E. McGlade ‘76 ‘80G
President, CEO and Chairman of Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.
McGlade will be sharing his experiences from the industrial engineering department and how it prepared him for his current role. According to McGlade, ...leadership skills or life skills are as important as the technical skills you are taught today. What can you begin today that will prepare you to survive and thrive through the inevitable twists and turns of life and your career? Graduating from Lehigh University is not the end of your education but rather a beginning; learning is a lifetime experience and leadership skills are critical -- a good idea is not enough.
McGlade joined Air Products in 1976 as a participant in the company’s Career Development Program. He subsequently held various positions within the firm, and was named vice president and general manager for the Chemical and Process Industries, and Energy Systems Division in 1998 and the Performance Materials Division in 2001. In 2003 he became group vice president, Chemicals Group, and was appointed president and COO in 2006, president and CEO in October 2007, and Chairman of the Board in April 2008. A native of the Lehigh Valley, he serves on the board of directors of the American Chemistry Council and is a member of the Society of Chemical Industry executive committee. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees for Lehigh and a member of the SteelStax leadership team.
Spencer Schantz graduated from Lehigh in 1955 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. Following progressive responsibilities with several electrical manufacturing companies, in 1969 he founded U.S. Controls Corporation and became CEO and President. The Spencer C. Schantz Distinguished Lecture Series was established by Jerelyn Schantz, who, together with her late husband, sought to bring a valuable educational experience to faculty, student and friends of Lehigh’s Industrial and Systems Engineering Department.
